The big edition comes to the Epic Games Store

Tower Craft is growing up. The big edition rebuilds the game in a full 3D engine and turns the endless ladder into a proper 20-map campaign — every map hand-built, your roster and ranks unlocking as you push deeper, with five ranks per defender instead of three.

It ships with the same map editor we build the campaign with — draw roads, paint over fifty kinds of terrain, spin the camera to any angle and playtest instantly — plus a Versus mode where you and a friend spend the same gold on an army each and then watch the two lines meet, and interfaces in fourteen languages, from Japanese to Farsi.

It lands on the Epic Games Store first, and it is now the only way to play Tower Craft — the Discord Activity and the free browser build have both been retired so the whole game can move to the big edition.

What it is

A tower defense where nothing you place is a tower. Every defender is a person: an archer who draws, looses and reaches for another arrow; a wizard who steps into his cast; a man-at-arms who plants himself in the road and physically stops things walking.

Rank one up and you do not get a second copy of him. You re-equip that man — a heavier bow, better armour, a nastier trick than he had before. The board stays a company of people rather than becoming a field of turrets.

How to play

Pick a road. The campaign runs to twenty hand-built maps, opening up as you push deeper.
Build anywhere that is not the road. Trees and rubble are cleared by whatever you put there.
Watch what is coming. Enemies resist different things — bring frost to a dragon, never fire.
Rank your people up. Five ranks each, and every rank re-equips the man you already have.
Hold the road to the end of the wave, then do it again somewhere harder.

What makes it different

No two defenders reach the same distance. A longbow outranges a crossbow; the falconer sees furthest of anyone because he is not the one doing the looking. Where you stand a man matters as much as which man he is.

The sky is a separate problem. Drakes come fast, wyverns armoured, dragons slowly and with contempt for fire. They travel the same road as everything else — but above it, where half your roster cannot reach them.

Co-op is four purses and one queen. Everyone earns and builds separately, and nobody can sell your work. But there is one board, and only one of you has to misjudge a wave.

Questions

Is Tower Craft multiplayer?

Yes — up to four of you share one board online. Everyone earns their own gold and builds their own defenders, but the queen is shared, and so is losing her. There is also a Versus mode, and the whole campaign plays perfectly well solo.

How many maps does Tower Craft have?

Twenty, each one hand-built rather than generated, running from a gentle switchback to three lanes that never touch. Your roster and your ranks unlock as you push deeper into them.

Can I still play Tower Craft in Discord?

No. The Discord Activity and the free browser build were both retired ahead of the Epic launch, so the big edition is now the only way to play. Everything that was in them is in it, and a great deal more.

What is the big edition of Tower Craft?
